Did You Know?

The principle behind the the Camera Obscura or pinhole camera was first discovered by the Chinese philosopher Mo-Ti (470 BC–390 BC), and later described by Aristotle. The first working camera obscura was built by Iraqi scientist Ibn al-Haytham, also known in the West as Alhacen or Alhazen, (965–1039AD). Speculation continues today as to whether Dutch Masters such as Vermeer used pinhole cameras to achieve new levels of detail in their works.

TIP

When shopping for antiques, remember to bring a flashlight and measuring tape with you. The flashlight will help you to see in dark areas where light is less than full, and if you have a specific space in mind for your new purchase, measure items to make sure that they will fit.

Did You Know?

Cravat’s were of militay origin, (Louis XIII, Croatian mercenary regiment), and were worn by men from the 1630 until World War I. The word cravat derives from the French cravate, a French mispronunciation of "Croat," or in Croatian, Hrvat.

TIP

When choosing a silver polish, find one that is either a paste or a cream. Dipping polishes are very strong and can harm the silver. In a pinch, non-abrasive toothpaste can be used.
