Did You Know?
Bakelite was invented by Dr. Leo Baekeland in 1907–1909 and was the first “plastic” made from synthetic compounds. At one point there was a shortage of metal for coins, and Bakelite was considered as an alternate coin material.

A “fob” is a chain or ornament that is attached to a pocket watch. If the pocket watch also has a cover it is called a “fob watch”. Today, the slang expression “fob” or “fobbing” has the connotation of shirking or passing responsibility.

TIP
When choosing a silver polish, find one that is either a paste or a cream. Dipping polishes are very strong and can harm the silver. In a pinch, non-abrasive toothpaste can be used.

Viscountess Harberton was a strong believer in women getting healthy exercise and the Rational Dress Society cycling costume, which was composed of a divided skirt under a long coat. In 1895 she wore her outfit into the
Hautboy Hotel and was denied entry into the coffee room. She later filed suit against the hotel, but the jury decided against her and her cycling outfit.

To remove dust from books, vacuum them with a soft brush. Do not wipe dust off of books or pages because it can damage the paper. Gently fluffing pages while holding the book upside down can also loosen debris.

TIP
Never use furniture oil such as lemon oil on antique furniture. Just wipe it with a damp cloth or use only clear paste wax (Minwax or beeswax) to keep the wood in good condition.

Did You Know?
Early Mepopotamian writing was done on clay as early as the third millennium B.C., and the Romans wrote on wax tablets. Papyrus scrolls used by the Egyptians, with sheets of papyrus glued together to form "books" of 10 or more meters long (the history of the reign of Ramses III, was over 40 meters long).
Early bound books were constructed of dried palm leaves that were rubbed with ink and bound together by wooden boards and twine—this form of book binding originated in India with religous sutras, or bound collection of aphorisms.

TIP
Use only white glue to adhere broken pieces of porcelain, stoneware, or pottery together. After applying glue, press pieces together and shift slightly for a tight fit. Wipe off excess glue from both sides with a damp cloth and let dry. Use masking tape to hold pieces snuggly while drying if necessary.

17th century "state beds" were designed for important guests (and for producing heirs before selected witnesses) and were not meant to be slept on. Louis XIV developed the petit levée ritural during which an an elite set of chosen courtiers could attend to his bodily needs, and the practice was soon adopted by other european heads of state.

To remove stains from stoneware dishes, soak them for 24 hours or more in one gallon of hot water in which two denture cleaner tablets have been dissolved.

Did You Know?
"French Polishing," the furniture industry standard in Europe during the 18th and 19th centuries, was a hugely labor intensive process where many very thin layers of shellac were hand-rubbed onto wood furniture with a pad made from wadding wrapped in cotton (called a fad), a process which resulted in a very high gloss surface with rich, deep color. This costly method was mostly abandoned by manufacturers by the 1930's. If you have a french polished piece that needs restoration, this forgiving surface can be easily repaired.
|
TIP
Antique furniture should never be cleaned with commercial cleaning products or polishes. Instead, if you must, use a soft cloth sprayed with some glass cleaner, or use a weak tea solution.
