TIP

When evaluating furniture, look at the finish of the wood to determine history. Up until around 1837, shellac was the only clear finish used. Lacquer and varnish were not developed until the Victorian era. Older pieces may also be finished with oil, milk, or wax paint.

Did You Know?

1:25th scale model cars were originally manufactured in the later 1940's by the company Banthrico for banks to give to new clients. The model cars had a slot in the bottom to hold spare change and the bank’s name and address painted on the roof. The cars were modeled after Buicks, Cadillacs, Lincolns, Packards, Desotos, Chryslers, Dodges, Chevrolets, and Fords.

TIP

When dusting wood furniture use a damp cloth, furniture oil can damage the piece.

Did You Know?

Shadow boxes, (an enclosed case used in dioramas typically presented to members of the military upon retirement). According to a myth, sailors believed that it was bad luck for their shadow to reach land before their bodies, so shadow boxes were made to store their shadow until they reached land safely.

TIP

If you have an antique clock, clean and lubricate it every five years or so and if you don’t feel comfortable doing it yourself, take it to an expert.

Did You Know?

"Silver Thursday" (March 27, 1980) refers to the Nelson Bunker Hunt and Herbert Hunt of Texas, aka "The Hunt Brothers" and their attempt to corner the silver market between 1979 and 1980. In 1979, they earned around 2 to 4 billion dollars in silver speculation. But in the end they had to take out a $1.1 billion line of credit between multiple banks to pay back their losses.

TIP

When people use the term provenance they are referring to the confirmation of time, place and/or person responsible for making the item and the previous ownership. When buying an antique piece you want to find out an item’s provenance before buying it to make sure that it is not a reproduction.
